Coming from Canada, where having health care is a right, it seems illogical that in america people are going bankrupt over medical bills. I see the commercials running on tv that go against it, but they are packed full of lies. I cannot understand why americans think that only the rich deserve to be taken care of. I understand that insurance companies pay big bucks to have lobbyists in the government try to shoot down any type of universal health care, but why is the average joe american so scared of it?

There are legitimate policy differences between the ideas of the two parties. The unfortunate thing is that debate is impossible because the media on both sides portray the other side as evil. They have effectively confused disagreement with evil.
Just wanted to point out that free health care isn’t on the table.
It’s also not true that all Americans oppose it. Most do, because most are barely making it and the tax increases it would require would completely crush them.
Uh, yes, there are a lot of Americans who believe lies. Apparently, there’s a Brit making the rounds of media, who opposes the UK system. This gives “proof” that such systems are bad (to all those incapable of rational thought).
What we’re arguing about now, isn’t free, but affordable health care.
Oddly, many of those screaming loudest against any “government-run programs” are currently on Medicare, the government-run health care program for seniors.
It goes against our values of the ”laisez-faire” originated by Adam Smith. For the past 200 years, America grew rich and powerful due to free trade, and that was what made us, Americans, strong. If we were to have a Universal Healthcare System, it will take away that value, because the government is behind it and is regulating all the money, and it will put Capitalism to a halt.
America is where people come to get rich. People from other countries know that America is where they can use their knowledge and make a Fortune 500 Company and become a billionaire, whereas, their country is socialist and they loose all their hard work for some low-life scum.
And by the way, the rich (or people who actually work) buy their healthcare and are qualified for it.
P.S.
On the News on T.V., didn’t my Anchormen say that your Health Care system is ineffective? Didn’t it say that patients need to wait multiple years for treatment?
You and other countries with ab NHS are not getting it free. The government is taking plenty out of you in taxes, why not let you keep that and buy your own insurance? Oh I know, then you would not have every other hard worker contributing to help you out. NHS has been proven to be inefficient and selective.
because most Americans do not make enough money to pay half their pay check in taxes. Also we resent having to pay for people here illegally.
We think congress should identify the people who do not have insurance and give them a plan, and not involve those people who already have insurance.
Because America was founded on the principle that the rich can and should squeeze from the poor. It’s an attitude we inherited from Old England.
Ironic how England, Canada, France and many other countries can figure out how to take care of their citizens in a democracy.
It isn’t free. It has to be paid for some way. Do none of the health care providers in Canada get paid? Don’t they earn a living. Are all of the drugs donated by pharmaceutical companies? Look again. Health care isn’t free anywhere unless its donated time and medicine.
The Republicans just don’t get it. The Northeast republicans are filthy rich and can pay themselves, and the Southern republicans don’t have any teeth to begin with…so they just follow and do what Blue Cross and Blue Shield says the republican way is
Canada and Europe don’t have as many illegals free loading off the medical system, do they? That’s a major problem here in America! And all the lazy people we have who don’t want to work for what they get!
I’m from the UK, and no offence, but I think we have the best healthcare in the world. And we don’t pay for it like the suckers in America.
What you are saying is just not true. I am far from rich. I have health insurance. Saying that only the rich are taken of is a lie.
Also America is not a socialst country.
It’s not free. If you’re happy with your second rate health care, fine. You know, though you would love to have ours, the best in the whole entire world.
there are only 3 kinds of people who think there’s such a thing as ‘free’ health care:
idiots
children
illegal aliens
which are you?
Hardworking people have to be taxed so that you have your free healthcare. Many dont want to get a job, but want free healthcare. Must be nice.
Because America is full of Douchebags
Go back to canada if you are so happy there.
There is no such thing as free anything thats why.
There is no such thing as “free healthcare”. Somebody always has to pay.
Free health care? That would only be possible with magic.
Nothing is free so if you are counting on free health care that’s exactly what you are going to get, NOTHING !
Only children think its “free”.
Because its one more thing our government dose not need to control us with, the gov is supposed to be there to protect our rights, but instead they infringe on them. The way the constitution works is full proof, but some how they are passing laws that go against it. So now is the time for Americans to say we have had enough. We just want to be left alone. The Press says only 50mill out of 350mill dont have health insurance. They say only 9mill out of that 50mill are Americans. So if only 9million Americans (according to them) dont have health care then why in the hell do we need it? We do have a problem with health care, but its not with the care we get, its with the prices. If they just regulated prices on meds docs hospital bills and insurance bills and plans then we would be fine. But instead they want to right a whole other bill that will give them more control. They can say we are a “free market” but realy we are not. We have regulations on food to “protect us” why not on health care? Oh but i fergot the regulations on food are only bad for you. When we are alowed to spray our food with chemicals that are known to cause cancer, heart problems, liver problems, lung problems, and lower iq.
chris your asking a great question. i think if any american that was against this policy ever lived in a system like yours or englands they would think we were idiots. i think onkel’s post shows part of the problem . the people on the right refuse to believe or even look for things we can learn from other countries. thats really stupid. i think context is important too. in the financial times like these people can be frightened more easily. you have companys that are raping the consumers here but people are afraid that if they change it will get worse. its almost like the battered woman syndrome. on meet the press today they mentioned another thing. that is most people dont know the real cost of health care. and insurance. when employers are paying the cost they wont see unless dropped
